Because of its position at the edge of open waters on the trade routes leading from the southwest Aegean towards the Black Sea and Asia Minor coasts, Psará had a flourishing Mycenaean settlement in the 13th century BC. Excavations have revealed Hellenistic settlement on the site of the present town and a Roman presence at other points of the island.
