What On Earth Is God Doing For Heavens' Sake

We’ve all been curious about life: the meaning of it, who God is within life and what purposes we could have within our timelines on Earth. Questions also about God’s allowance of suffering in the world and the purposes of Jesus dying on the cross to be our Savior also may surface in this pondering of the truth.


Such was in the story of Sam Baird and his eleven-year-old son John, as they grapple with the sudden death of Sam’s wife (and John’s mother) Eunice to cancer. How could a young woman so full of life and love be taken so soon, and especially when she had a family to raise? These questions and more are what prompt John to ask the question of questions: “What are we here for?”

Dewey uses the fictionalized story of Sam and John to inspire conversations about God and His individual purposes for each person in God’s collective plan of redemption.


Sam uses his own faith in God, combined with scripture verses and stories, to create a lengthy dialogue with John that ventures into who Jesus is, what it means to be “saved by His blood” and how people, as new creations in Christ, are to view life from then on.


What they discover will not just change their perspectives towards God and life, but also change the lives of those around them.


If we are ever to begin to understand why we are here and why things happen as they do, we must accept the fact that it is not about us.
