Beyond Lies the Wub

On a Mars supply mission, Captain Franco and his crew load cargo animals for transport when Peterson arrives with a strange native creature called a wub. Franco first dismisses it as a giant pig, but its pitiful, tearful manner suggests something far more unsettling and intelligent. Almost at once, the crew begins debating whether the creature should simply be eaten, setting greed and practicality against the possibility of an unknown life form. Aboard the ship, the wub proves difficult to manage but unexpectedly articulate, speaking just as Franco prepares to have it judged as food. Its calm protest shocks the crew and forces the captain to confront the fact that they have captured a conscious being, not livestock. In private, the wub reveals itself as an ancient telepathic race that lives peacefully on plants and by reading minds, and it argues with wit and dignity against the crew's barbaric intentions.
