Die Gesellschaft von St. Jago

Heinrich von Kleists Erzählung DAS ERDBEBEN IN CHILI veranschaulicht an zwei antagonistischen Gruppen die Unangemessenheit religiöser Deutungen von realen Ereignissen. Das Beben fungiert dabei als Katalysator, der die konträren Positionen deutlich hervortreten lässt. Die sich als christlich verstehende Gesellschaft von St. Jago verrät ihre Ideale, indem sie die zur Heiligen Familie Stilisierten erschlägt. Der Mord an Josephe, Jeronimo und ihrem (Adoptiv-)Kind rekurriert auf die Opferung Isaaks, wodurch die Bewohner von St. Jago hinter das jüdisch-christliche Verbot des Menschenopfers zurückfallen. Die Rolle von Jeronimo und Josephe ist ambivalent: Einerseits bilden sie das Zentrum einer utopischen Gemeinschaft, andererseits ist ihr Selbstbild hybrisch, da sie sich selbst als Heilige Familie wahrnehmen, deren Rettung jedes noch so monströse Opfer rechtfertige. Ihre Selbsttäuschung verstärken die Liebenden zusätzlich dadurch, dass sie ihre Geschichte in einer Art Donquijoterie als trivialen Liebesroman erleben. Doch in einem grausigen, metatextuellen Spiel lässt der Erzähler sie statt vor dem Trau- auf dem Opferaltar enden. In THE EARTHQUAKE IN CHILE, the failure of religious interpretations of real events is illustrated by two antagonistic groups. The earthquake functions as a catalyst that throws the opposing views into relief. The society of St Jago which understands itself as Christian betrays its ideals by destroying the protagonists who are stylized as the holy family. The murder of Josephe, Jeronimo and their (adopted) child refers to the sacrifice of Isaac by which the inhabitants of St Jago regress behind the Jewish-Christian taboo on human sacrifices. The role of Jeronimo and Josephe is ambivalent: on the one hand they form the center of the utopian community, on the other their self-perception is not free from hybris because they regard themselves as the holy family whose survival justifies even monstrous actions. The lovers' self-delusion is exacerbated by the fact that they also perceive their story – in some kind of quixotism – as a trivial love affair. But in a gruesome meta-textual game the narrator leads them to the altar of sacrifice rather than marriage.
