Eeldrop and Appleplex rent shabby rooms in a morally shadowed district, drawn to the nearby police station and the raw spectacle of human life. As they watch crowds, suspects, and passersby, they search for those rare moments when a person slips free of a social label and appears in vivid, irreducible reality. Their conversations are sharp, restless, and skeptical of easy categories, whether in daily life or in philosophy itself. Through reflections on a vulgar Spaniard, a troubled marriage, and a murder, they argue that relatives, reformers, and the public all distort experience by turning people into convenient abstractions. Instead, they insist on the concrete, private truth of suffering, action, and tragedy. The second half shifts to a suburban Sunday and to Edith, also called Scheherazade, a woman pieced together from gossip and fragments of evidence. In her, Eeldrop sees not a fixed identity but a restless modern life shaped by desire, reinvention, decay, vanity, excess, and disappointment.
