Garthowen

Gethin Owens’s gift for Morva—a necklace of shining shells—ends up around Bella Lewis’s neck instead. He lets her keep it, then hurries into the grimy street to buy another before setting out for home.

On a sultry July afternoon in a South Wales seaport, the young sailor is preparing to leave foreign seas for the cows and cawl of Garthowen. He jokes with his landlady, recalls the boyish mischief that drove him from home, and wonders how his father will receive him. And what of Morva, the little girl who once clung to him as he went? The hills may be familiar, but years away have changed the people waiting there. Will Gethin find that Garthowen still has a place for him?
