CHAPTER 1: LIVE IN ‘DAY-TIGHT COMPARTMENTS’
The first part of the book starts with the author’s explanation from Sir William Osier, who suggests that people should live in ‘day-tight compartments.’ This means that people should focus all their intelligence and enthusiasm into their daily work. This also means that people should stop living in the past and start living now, in the present moment. The author says that people should live in the present because living in the past or in the future is actually wasted energy, something that will only cause unnecessary worry, stress, and mental distress.
After this, the author makes a comparison with what Jesus said in the New Testament: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow; for morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” This does not mean that we should not prepare for tomorrow, this means that, although we should prepare ourselves for what tomorrow brings, we should not be anxious about it.
Then the author says that people are like an hourglass; they start many tasks every day and they want to finish those tasks. If people do not finish these tasks they are bound to break their own physical or mental structure. That is why it is vital for people to focus their energy on finishing one task at a time.
