Some jobs take intellect, others use a hammer. Hank Raslo's gig requires the whole toolkit. To some, he's a loan shark preying on degenerate gamblers in New York City. To the Havana Syndicate, he's the secret tool used whenever the Mob wants to investigate the Mob.

When a major heroin bust in the summer of 1956 triggers a series of raids on the Mob's top earner, the Syndicate orders Hank to find the rat. While chasing a lead he'd strong-armed off a reporter, Hank is distracted by a sapphire-eyed blonde from his past. She says she's almost single. He says he's game. It's all fun and secrets until someone gets it on film.

With the Syndicate losing patience, and the threat of blackmail pointing at him like a loaded gun, Hank must run a gauntlet of treachery, deceit, and murder to get the rat, keep the girl, and stay alive.
