Louie doesn’t love school, and school doesn’t love him. He draws when he should be studying, teachers scold him and the other pigs taunt him. But he keeps drawing ---mostly pictures from his mother’s childhood stories about the convent school in Paris where she grew up, where all the girls walked in two straight lines...


This is a story of a young artist who---like a great many young artists--- loves to draw on anything, anywhere, and anytime. And who is lucky enough to discover a way to create his wonderful art for a lifetime.


A Note from Will Hillenbrand

LOUIE! is most truly a story about an artist, for very often the artist’s life takes a different path from that of a great many other people. At the same time, I was intrigued with a particular artist, Ludwig Bemelmans, the creator of Madeline, and so I based this story very loosely on his life.
