Descripción editorial

Martin Eden is a young Oakland sailor, strong and barely schooled, until a chance dinner among the cultivated Morse family — and his love for their daughter, Ruth — shows him a world of books and refinement he has never imagined. Determined to make himself worthy of her, he begins to educate himself with ferocious will: reading everything, pawning his few possessions for time, and teaching himself to write in the conviction that authorship is the ladder by which a poor man may climb.

What follows is the truest account in American fiction of the writing life endured from below — the borrowed typewriter, the hunger, the manuscripts mailed out and returned, the editors who do not answer. And when success comes at last, it comes too late and means too little: just after Ruth has given him up, the world that scorned the struggling writer fawns on the famous one. Martin discovers that the class he worshipped is mediocre, that he belongs nowhere now, and that a triumph won entirely for oneself can leave a man with nothing to live for.

First published in 1909 and drawn closely from London’s own rise from the Oakland docks, Martin Eden is at once the most inspiring and the most disenchanted of self-made-man stories. London intended it as an attack on the lone individualism his hero embodies — a man who has cut every tie of solidarity and is destroyed by his own success — though he complained that his readers missed the warning. Intense, naturalistic, and unforgettable, it is the novel by which his deepest seriousness as a writer is now measured.

This edition pairs the complete text with an editor’s foreword on the novel’s composition and meaning, a biographical note, a guide to further reading, and questions for reflection.
