The Discourses

No other edition of The Discourses treats it as what it actually is: a classroom.

Every other version on the market gives you either a stripped public-domain text with no guidance, or an academic apparatus built for a university syllabus. This edition does neither. It restores Epictetus as a teacher in front of a room, and gives you, the modern reader, a way to sit in that room without getting lost across four books and ninety-five discourses.

Each discourse opens with *The Classroom* — the scene behind the text: who Epictetus is addressing, what provoked the lecture, the irritation or patience or dry sarcasm the words don't spell out on their own. The complete discourse follows, based on the Matheson translation with editorial adjustments for contemporary clarity — never rewritten, never abridged. Then *The Argument* traces the logical structure most modern readers were never trained to follow, and *Modern Reading* grounds it in one specific, concrete situation from life today. The twenty-five discourses of greatest philosophical weight add *Close Reading*, tracing key Greek terms and Epictetus's place among Chrysippus, Zeno, and Marcus Aurelius.

Two appendices exist nowhere else: *Five Reading Paths*, five curated routes through all ninety-five discourses for readers who don't want to start at 1.1, and a full cross-reference linking every chapter of the Enchiridion (Volume 4) to the discourses that develop it — connecting both books explicitly for the first time.

All four books. All ninety-five discourses. Complete, annotated, and finally readable as what they were: a philosopher, teaching.
