One Year As Chief Medical Officer: Challenges Encountered and Lessons Learned (Careers) (Organization Overview‪)‬

Two years ago I was mid-career in my mid-40S as department chair at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. I had been with Mayo since residency training and was reasonably confident in my leadership skills. I had been an associate residency director, chaired multiple important institutional committees and had attended the various leadership courses Mayo had to offer. As the chair of family medicine, I knew my opportunities to hold higher positions of leadership were likely limited being a primary care physician in a multispecialty clinic known for its high-tech specialty and subspecialty care.
