They Said It Couldn't Be Done

Although some of them have been surpassed, these were the first great construction marvels. Other engineers, experts, people from every walk of life, said these projects would be impossible, doomed to failure. The planned Empire State Building would simply sink into the ground. The great Hoover Dam would crack and drown millions of people, the Gateway Arch would never stand up, the Holland Tunnel would almost certainly flood and drown thousands, the roof of the Astrodome would collapse, and on and on. The builders who created these mighty memorials were certain their projects would stand for generations, for centuries. These are the stories of the brave, brilliant men who created these construction miracles. They are all still standing, still serving man. Into the distant future it is very likely that people will marvel at the great faces on Mount Rushmore, and wonder how such a backward society could create such a memorial even if they don't know who these faces are.
