Lesson #1: Desire: The Starting Point Of All Achievement

The starting point of all achievement is DESIRE. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small fire makes a small amount of heat.

Edwin C. Barnes had a strong Desire – he wanted to become a business associate of the famous scientist Thomas Alva Edison. But there were two problems!
1) Edwin Barnes did not know Edison
2) Edwin Barnes was dead broke. He didn’t even have enough money to buy himself a railroad fare.
Many people have desire for riches but it isn’t strong enough. Face a challenge or two – they immediately say good bye to their desires. But Barnes was a strong-willed man and so was his desire to become partnered with Edison.
Barnes was determined to make his desire a reality. He travelled by ‘blind baggage’ to Orange, New Jersey so as not to get defeated by his ‘broke’ status. He went to Edison’s laboratory and said he had come to partner with the inventor. Edison admired the young man’s desire and determination and hired him for a menial job at the laboratory.
