Samuel Butler's remarkable little book, written decades before Bergson's celebrated "Creative Evolution", was perhaps the earliest expression of the Vitalist philosophy, arguing that evolution has a purpose, and that purpose is, ultimately the creation of a God who will be Pure Mind, dominating or supplanting matter.
