This memoir works well on several levels -- it was written about 20 years after the Civil War, but the memories are still fresh and provide much incite into the personalities of the players on both sides. Grant again demonstrates his respect for both sides and states more than once that it was Americans on both sides in the war. He shows sensitivity to all involved.
