AMNESTY

Two months after 9/11, James Scurlock moved to Los Angeles to become a filmmaker. There he met Yolanda Garcia, an immigrant mother of three who foraged the alleys of Venice Beach for recyclables in order to send her three children to college. After Yolanda’s eldest son, Rogelio, graduated from MIT, she traveled back to Oaxaca, the place where her own dreams had been shattered and where her fate had been sealed by two curses. Scurlock’s documentary, Parents of the Year, went on to win the Los Angeles Film Festival and was purchased by Showtime. In AMNESTY, he tells the tale of an extraordinary woman and the unlikely friendship that may have saved her life.
