A cleaner answers the door at her employer's home as a storm rages. She looks outside; there's no one there.

When she goes back into the house, she's faced with the aftermath of a horrific home invasion, but there's no sign of the intruder. DI Leah Hutch and DS Ben Randle are called to the scene.

The crime echoes a case from years before. The killer was recently released, then vanished without trace. He was once an associate of Leah's father but, asking for help from a man she can't trust, puts Leah in a very vulnerable place.
