JANET EVANOVICH calls Midnight Louie “the funniest, hairiest, hard-boiled detective on the planet.” The Prime Suspect finds the series “everything you might want in a mystery: glitzy Las Vegas, real characters, suspense, a tough puzzle, and...on top of it all, a fine sense of humor and some illuminating social commentary.”
The fourth Midnight Louie mystery is “the best Louie adventure yet, full of intricate plotting and sharp characterization. And Louie? Nine lives wouldn’t be nearly enough for this dude,” says Publishers Weekly.
New York Times Notable Book of the Year author Carole Nelson Douglas pits petite PR powerhouse Temple Barr against mysterious saboteurs whose “pranks” threaten her life when she supervises a redo of the Crystal Phoenix hotel-casino as a “family friendly” venue. Temple must contend with the local police, FBI agents, obnoxious reporters and a posse of semi-reformed Mafiosi wearing pastel zoot suits. Luckily, alley cat P.I. Midnight Louie unsheaths his shivs to help his new detecting roommate expose the foul play at work.
“Las Vegas’s feline detective extraordinary returns... Louie is an irresistible combination of Nathan Detroit and Sam Spade. Plenty of interest here for a lengthy, fun-filled series.”—Mostly Murder
“If it's murder, it must be Midnight Louie time! Carole Nelson Douglas's cool dude feline detective pulls off some fancy footwork when he matches wits with a murderer...Written with stylish zest and irresistible panache, this clever tale operates on a multiplicity of levels.”—Melinda Helfer, RT Book Reviews 4½ stars
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Midnight Louie, the coolest feline in Las Vegas, returns from Cat on a Blue Monday to tackle the ``nefarious dudes'' who are plaguing the Crystal Phoenix Hotel. Freelance publicist Miss Temple Barr, Louie's domestic companion, has signed on to redo the hotel's image and is also writing a big production number for the annual Gridiron roast at the hotel. Her finale trots out old rumors about the mob--all in good fun, she thinks, until she's injured during rehearsals. Meanwhile, ex-priest Matt Devine winds up under the suspicious gaze of Lieutenant Molina when the body of his hated stepfather drops out of the ceiling onto a casino gaming table. Louie learns something of his own about family values, as he manages to keep his identity secret from young, sour-faced Midnight Louise until he and his hostile offspring meet up with a third black cat, the formerly seafaring Three O'Clock Louie. This is the best Louie adventure yet, full of intricate plotting and sharp characterization. And Louie? Nine lives wouldn't be nearly enough for this dude.
