Getting along the river Thames, over the Millennium Bridge to the south bank and then turning back towards the north bank. This has been my 3-times-a-week jogging course.

One early morning, I was jogging on my usual course. And the view I was seeing wasn’t anything special until I turned on the bridge back towards the north side of the river. What caught my eyes at the moment I turned were so many cranes. Those cranes were not particularly new things there, although depending which one of course, they must’ve been there at least for some time.

But on that particular morning they looked very much standing out to me and gave me some kind of impression.

After that morning, I began seeing more cranes and more cranes and more… with conscious attention.

Another day I came across one photo book, which introduced a history of London with photographs. 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s… cranes were everywhere in the book. Maybe finding a view without a crane is more difficult than finding one with. But cranes hardly get treated as a main subject or draw much attention.

My interest in cranes gradually but definitely has grown ever since.

That’s how “Cranespotting” began.
