Ester's Pet

Ester's Pet helps children explore characteristics and attributes. Help your children produce the /s/ sound on each page in a manner that reflects the characteristic. For example, make the /s/ sounds fast and loud for the puppies, but make a series of very slow /s/ sounds for the turtle. Make the /s/ sound like snoring for the hamsters, and tip toe with the rat as his feet make extremely quiet /s/ sounds. Help children compare and contrast the pets and their characteristics. Be sure to help children who are not yet using the /s/ sound in their own speech to find their perfect /s/ inside their mouths. Help them feel the stream of air as it escapes through their teeth. Have children add a page to the book by drawing a picture of a potential pet and writing the /s/ sound to show how this pet acts. Find the letter “s” at the beginning, middle, and ends of words throughout the book.
