Pasubio, Grappa, Ortigara: these are names that  still evoke strong emotions to   people living in that area, the Prealpi of the north-east of Italy.  These are names that convey the meaning of national unity, here more than  anywhere else, in despite of the late separatist political movements.


Every village, every hamlet, have got their memorial , either a big monument or a plain  commemorative plaque, to honor the memory of the fallen of the "Guera Granda", as they call World War One in their dialect. Every family have a grandfather or a great grandfather who was at war  as Alpine, maybe dead for the Country, or one of the thousands of missing of the Great War, and it is not uncommon to hear their stories, in a cold winter evening,  in the warmth of a tavern.
