Haroun al-Raschid (also spelled Harun al-Rashid), was an Abassid Caliph (i.e. ruler) of modern day Iraq, from 786 to 809 A.D.  His reign was marked by the advancement of science, art, and general prosperity.  To this day, he remains one of the most famous caliphs ever to rule.
