Sao Paulo: Editora Atica, 2000. 288 pp. 12.50 C. MARXISMO WITHOUT UTOPIA, written by a maverick veteran of the Brazilian left, will undoubtedly be of great interest to scholars and activists keen to reassess the contemporary relevance of Marxism both as a political philosophy and as a guide to action. The title of the book consciously reflects the author's principal aim--to invest Marxist theory with greater contemporary relevance by expunging from it the utopian errors that its founders ostensibly committed and its key protagonists perpetuated--errors that have undermined and retarded the successful achievement of the socialist project. However, and despite its declared aim, the book's content--half manual of political economy, half manifesto for post Cold War socialists--may prove less satisfying to those seeking more specific insights into the Marxist view of utopia or, indeed, the utopian in Marx and Marxism.
