James Fenimore Cooper

This account of Cooper's life is one of the earliest in print. According to biographer Thomas Raynesford Lounsbury, when Cooper lay on his deathbed in 1851, he enjoined his family to permit no authorized account of his life. A wish uttered at such a time, Lounsbury argues, has the weight of a command. Thus, the sources for this biography were drawn from sketches of his career, which were found in magazines and encyclopedias.
