Jane Bennet of Kurrajong

Jane Bennet arrived in Australia as a small child, but now knows and loves the bush.
Her father manages a pub in the small bush town of Kurrajong, while her mother continually complains about her role as the hotel cook. Her sister Elizabeth is married and living on a local station, and her younger sisters are still school girls.

Jane is the hotel housekeeper. She would prefer to live in the bush, perhaps as a station governess, but at the moment she is supporting her parents. Then her father's sudden death changes everything.
Jane, her mother, and her younger sisters move to the nearest city. They are all delighted by the change. Only Jane misses her beloved bush.
George Wickham seeks out Jane, trying to restart a previous failed relationship. Mary introduces Charles Bingley, a new arrival from England, into the family. George lives his life in the bush; Charles is afraid of it.
