Utgivarens beskrivning

You learned the openings. You drilled the tactics. You memorized the standard endgames. And then, somewhere between 1600 and 2200, your rating stopped moving.
Mastering Chess is the book for the player who has hit that plateau and refuses to accept it.
This is not another opening manual or tactics drill book. It is the systematic treatment of what actually changes when you cross from intermediate to advanced play: the ability to think about a position on its own terms, rather than applying principles from memory.
The intermediate plateau is structural. Intermediate chess is the application of general principles to typical positions. Advanced chess is the recognition that every position contains features the general principles do not see — and the willingness to think about those features even when the principle insists you do not need to.
Across 25 chapters and six parts, you will work through:
PART I — FOUNDATIONS. What advanced play actually means; evaluation reconsidered (static factors plus initiative and time); the principle of two weaknesses.
PART II — STRATEGIC MASTERY. Thirteen named pawn structures and the plans that flow from them; piece coordination and the worst-placed piece; prophylaxis as a habit; minor piece imbalances; color complexes and square control; dynamic imbalances and the initiative; the architecture of attack, defense, and counterplay.
PART III — CALCULATION AND DECISION-MAKING. Candidate moves and the calculation tree (Kotov with modern critique); identifying critical moments; intuition versus concrete analysis; time management under tournament pressure.
PART IV — THE MODERN ENDGAME. Conversion technique; the theoretical endgames you must know (split into must-know-deeply and should-recognize tiers); a dedicated chapter on rook endgames; the transition from middlegame to favorable endgame.
PART V — OPENING PREPARATION IN THE ENGINE ERA. Building a coherent repertoire; working with engines without becoming dependent on them; when the second-best move is the right practical choice.
PART VI — PRACTICAL PLAY AND IMPROVEMENT. Tournament psychology; a method for studying annotated master games; a framework for self-analysis; a twelve-week training plan that ties everything together.
The book contains 108 chess diagrams and is intended for serious students of the game — club players from roughly 1600 ELO through the lower master ranges. The treatment is technical, not motivational. There are no rating-gain promises. There is, however, a clear and honest account of what advanced play looks like and a structured path toward it.
If you are willing to think about positions on their own terms, this book will give you the tools.
