James Fenimore Cooper was a popular American writer in 19th century. He was best known for his historical romances. Before his writer career, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings.

“Precaution” is a first romantic novel by James Fenimore Cooper that has a significant feature which became one of the most notable between others works of Cooper. The main plot of the story is centered in England. It was written in imitation of contemporary English domestic novels like those of Jane Austen and Amelia Opie, and it did not meet with contemporary success. The main idea of the novel had at that time a clear course that the choice of groom for her daughter a moral obligation to her parents.
