Six years earlier she came to the little English Village of Deepwood to spend a week. Now no one in the village could imagine life without her. No one could be funnier than Cousin Clarry on the subject of sex (and she was so right!); no one could be worse than Cousin Clarry on the cello. In short, no one could replace her and so she stayed. 

It all had to happen in six of the hottest summer weeks Deepwood had ever known. The eccentric new gardener let the flowers scorch and talked to people nobody else could see.  The gallant captain came back into his own as he stole the clothes of a lovely lady. The hardened hearts of the young nearly broke the hopeful hearts of the not-so-young...until the devil himself stepped in.  As always, nothing could be more pleasing. Mrs. Cadell brings to real life a wide variety of people you will take to your own heart—shocking, misguided, importunate, surprising as they may be.  She writes with a verve and fancy that is sheer enchantment and—unless you are prepared to be enchanted—there is no point at all in starting her wise and delightful novel.
