The children's book author Beatrix Potter grew up summering in the English Lakes and settled there as an adult, in the village of Sawrey. Potter purchased numerous properties and farms, which she left to the National Trust upon her death, and is credited with preserving much of the land that now comprises the Lake District National Park. Many of her stories reference the local landscape, including "The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin," in which the background illustrations depict the lake of Derwentwater and St. Herbert's Island.
