Publisher Description

This book is about Captain Sir Edward Belcher who led an expedition to the Malay Archipelago and parts of East Asia in the mid-nineteenth century. The objective of his excursion was to survey that part of the world and chronicle the time he spent with the people of different cultures and traditions. He was accompanied by Arthur Adams who provided the scientific aspects of the voyage by making notes on the natural history of the islands. While Captain Belcher's chronicle covered the ethonological aspects, Adams' account is more scientific in nature concentrating on the wildlife of the Archipelago. There is also a section where a translation of all the different native languages in the Malay Peninsula into English can be found.
