" This is an account of the author's journey on the Hyacinth which arrived in Singapore in May 1838. He describes the Chinese junks and sampans in the busy port of Singapore and called the town a ""perfect commercial Babel"". He recorded their fight agaist pirates and the events that led to the blockade of Quedah (Kedah). He also gave his impressions and observations of the character of the natives, their customs and superstitions and the life styles of the Europeans in Malaya. Included are also tales of slavery, tortures and cannibalism and descriptions of animals and reptiles. "
