The author describes in detail the history, politics, ethnology, agriculture, trade, economy, flora and fauna and religion of the states and settlements in the Malay Peninsula and Archipelago which he visited. He also recounts incidents he witnessed and his experiences and observations. Translations of several treaties are reproduced in appendices.
