This is a narrative account of the travels in Southeast Asia undertaken by the author as a representative of the American Missionary Societies, with the objective to survey and gather information relating to the various missionary posts in the region. Volume I of his work covers the Burmese Empire in great detail, providing vivid description of the places, peoples, culture and religious practices of the country. Volume II provides a descriptive account of the population, religious practices and the missionary stations in Calcutta, Madras, Singapore, Malacca and Bangkok. Included is also an account of the work and operations of the missions in the various places visited by the author.
