Publisher Description

Anne Fogarty and Timothy Martin, editors, Joyce on the Threshold. Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2005. xi+299 pages. USD 65.00. Joyce on the Threshold collects fourteen of the most interesting papers given at the London 2000 International James Joyce Symposium. Its main topic was 'The Right to Write', with its attendant issues of copyright, censorship, freedom of speech; but the date was too attractive not to invite contributions on the millennial theme, passages, thresholds, endings and beginnings. The location encouraged a look at Britain in Joyce/Joyce in Britain, the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Giordano Bruno's terrible burning linked a well-known though little studied interest of Joyce's with the conference's title. The essays selected by the Symposium's academic programme directors Anne Fogarty and Timothy Martin present various perspectives on these themes; the volume that results displays a remarkable coherence.
