Publisher Description

Social workers are increasingly playing important roles in cancer control. Zlotnik (2003) noted that social workers can have a significant impact in community-based cancer screening and prevention activities. This article highlights the importance of considering cultural beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge when addressing early breast cancer detection with diverse populations. It examines the usefulness of considering these factors in breast cancer health promotion and early detection strategies used with racially and ethnically diverse women. Although the women discussed here are grouped together based on assumptions of shared sociocultural backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences, it should be noted that there is a great degree of variability among them.
