In the fall of 2001, Brent Hoelscher built a retaining wall in his home, and in the process of lifting the concrete blocks, he strained his back. Thinking it was a simple injury, he continued working and self-diagnosed: it was just a minor inconvenience, and would heal on its own.

He couldn't have been more wrong.

After weeks of just dealing with the pain, it was evident that the injury was pointing to something much more serious. Brent Hoelscher was diagnosed with cancer, already in the third stage of development. "Cancer cells comprise 90% of your bone marrow," the doctor said. "There is no known cure for Multiple Myeloma. You've got three years."

It was devastating news. Brent and his wife Teresa had two young boys, and all the attendant responsibilities. How could they just accept this? What would the family do to survive?

Brent and his family now embarked on a journey of faith, growth and healing. One night, when things looked most hopeless, Brent prayed for clear guidance and the guts to take action. The next morning, he woke with six words ringing in his head:

Christianity, Attitude, Nutrition, Chiropractic, Exercise, Rest & Relaxation

The first letters of these words spelled CANCER. 

He'd gotten his answer.


Brent emerged from his journey cancer free, applying these six words every day. His walk through death brought him into contact with remarkable men and women of faith, and face to face with his own challenges of self and soul.
