Publisher Description
Little Women or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy is the first novel in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women series. This semi-autobiographical novel tells of the lives of four sisters, passing from childhood to womanhood against the backdrop of the Civil War and its aftermath. On their journey to womanhood, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, have to each find their own way. The path is filled happiness, sadness, heartache, and lessons to be learned, leading them to count their blessings and appreciate one another.
In the first volume, their father heads off to fight in the war, leaving them to suffer hardships and endure the constraints of poverty and social expectations. The second volume, otherwise known as Good Wives in the UK, Australia, and some US versions, picks up three years after the end of the first volume, and follows the sisters' journey into adulthood.
Originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, Little Women has been adapted for stage and screen several times with the latest being the critically acclaimed major motion picture by Greta Gerwig starring Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen as the March sisters with Laura Dern and Meryl Streep as Marmee and Aunt March, respectively.
