Publisher Description
In the search problems considered in this monograph, it is
necessary to detect an object such as a person, a vehicle, or
a bomb. An extensive research effort, initiated by Koopman
and his colleagues (19461, has been carried out on this type
of problem. Most of the previous works, however, assume that
there exists a probability distribution for the location of
the target, which is known to the searcher (i.e., a Bayesian
approach is used). In addition, most previous works, such as
those considered in "Theory of Optimal Search" (Stone, 1975),
are concerned with finding the optimal distribution of effort
spent in the search but do not actually present optimal search
trajectories. This fact has already been pointed out by
Dobbie (1968) in his survey on search theory.
