Winter descends on a Polish village like a force of nature, freezing fields, shattering roofs, and driving birds, animals, and people into shelter. In this harsh, epic realism, the peasants live at the mercy of storms that darken the land, bury roads and homes, and make survival depend on stubborn endurance and routine. But the greater struggle is not only against cold: it is against poverty, humiliation, and the bitter divisions within the community itself. In one cramped hut, Hanka fights to keep the fire alive while her family unravels under hunger and resentment. Antek, expelled from Boryna's house and consumed by anger, refuses work, broods over revenge, and leaves Hanka to carry the burden alone. Their need becomes unbearable when they are forced to sell their beloved cow, and the arrival of Jewish cattle dealers turns private grief into public shame. Yet hardship also draws the village together in the tavern, where drink, dance, and talk give way to open conflict over land, forest rights, and leadership. As Boryna arrives with Yagna, pride and desire complicate the gathering, and the villagers' festivity begins to harden into collective discontent and the first stirrings of revolt.
