Agatha Webb

Agatha Webb is found stabbed in her own house with the money untouched, and the servant girl who ran from the scene is not the answer. Green published The Leavenworth Case in 1878, nine years before Sherlock Holmes, and is called the mother of the detective novel; here the detection is done by Caleb Sweetwater, a young man of the town, against the certainty of everyone around him, and the motive is one of the strangest she invented. Fifty-eight plates by painters including Edvard Munch and Eastman Johnson carry the story's themes of home, return and the rooms where lives are lived, from 1831 to 1924.
