― H. Rider Haggard, Child of Storm

About the Book
Child of Storm, written by H. Rider Haggard, was published in 1913. In chronological sequence, it is the sixth novel in the Allan Quatermain/Ayesha series. The middle of the nineteenth century takes place in Zululand, where the story of Mameena, a beautiful African girl and the daughter of a lower-class chief, is told. She has high goals to move up the social scale but is constrained by a patriarchal culture. She uses her beauty to intimidate and dominate the men around her, including the English hero Allan Quatermain. The two sons of the real Zulu ruler Mpande, Cetshwayo and Umbelazi, are mentioned in the book. They battled each other for the succession and lost at the Battle of Ndondakusuka, also known as the Battle of the Tugela.
