A sunlit July morning finds Miss Maud Silver settled comfortably in a through carriage at a crowded London terminus, watching holidaymakers hurry past while she turns the pages of a magazine and knits a grey stocking. The train jerks to life, and a tall, pale girl in a grey flannel coat stumbles aboard, thrown against Miss Silver's corner by the swaying carriage. The girl's ash-blonde hair and milky skin mark her as something other than English, and her ungloved hands bear a platinum wedding ring. She says nothing at first, but her silence speaks louder than words. Miss Silver observes her with the calm, authoritative gaze of a woman who has seen too much.

When the girl finally speaks, her voice is flat and exhausted. She has come away in a hurry. They say her husband is trying to kill her. Miss Silver does not flinch. She has heard such confessions before, and she knows the difference between a disordered mind and a genuine threat. She asks the questions that matter, her knitting needles clicking softly in the background as the train carries them toward the city.

The girl's story unfolds in fragments, haunted by voices she heard behind a yew hedge and by the memory of a first wife who died climbing in Switzerland. Money, marriage, and a manor house called Tanfield all enter the conversation, along with the chilling suggestion that accidents have a way of happening to the inconvenient. Miss Silver offers no reassurances, only a card and a quiet promise that she is available if help is needed. The train slides into the gloom of the terminus, and two women part on the platform, one carrying a secret and the other carrying a case.
