Publisher Description
The title of this work is very misleading. With the exception of post-war counterfeiting, which is only very briefly mentioned, this story has absolutely nothing to do with either The United States Secret Service, which was not formed until April 14, 1865, or with Pinkertons, which preceded it. The author, H.B. Smith, was a 1st Lieutenant and Assistant Provost Marshal of the Military Division (or Department) commanded by Major General Lew Wallace, which was headquartered in Baltimore. There is no evidence in this document that Mr. Smith was ever officially connected in any way with The United States Secret Service, a branch of The Treasury Department.
