The Mettle of the Pasture

There are numerous characters in this short book but what it boils down to is the relationship between Rowan and Isabel. She's deliriously happy as he has asked her to marry him, then he lowers the boom when he confesses , he's fathered a child with another woman. Isabel breaks off the engagement but then later comes to Rowan's defense when the townsfolk turn against him.
