Houses and House-Life of the American Aborigines
Publisher Description
A summary was given to Johnson's New Universal Cyclopedia in the article on the Architecture of the American Aborigines. A Study of the Houses and House Life of the Indian Tribes with a scheme for the exploration of the ruins in New Mexico Arizona the San Juan region Yucatan and Central America. The following work substantially formed the Fifth Part of the original manuscript of Ancient Society under the title Growth of the Idea of House Architecture. In a previous work I have considered the organization of the American aborigines in gentes, phratries, and tribes, with the functions of each in their social system. From the importance of this organization to a right understanding of their social and governmental life, a recapitulation of the principal features of each member of the organic series is necessary in this connection.
