The Autobiography of a Quack and the Case of George Dedlow

In the "Case of George Dedlow", the hero, who lost both legs in the Civil War, was contacted by spirits at a séance. The spirits were his amputated limbs which had been preserved in the Army Medical Museum. They allowed him to "walk" on his invisible limbs.
