推理作家のオリヴァ夫人を迎えたハロウィーン・パーティで、少女が殺人の現場を目撃したことがあると言いだした。パーティの後、その少女はリンゴ食い競争用のバケツに首を突っこんで死んでいるのが発見された。童話的な世界で起こったおぞましい殺人の謎を追い、ポアロは推理を展開する。
