The book of Judges tells the story of how God raised up judges to deliver Israel from its oppressors in the time before Israel's monarchy was established. Some of these judges were good and noble like Gideon, and some were erratic and unstable like Samson. Sometimes, God's man of the hour wasn't even a man!
