George Orwell's nineteen Eighty-Four is one of the most definitive texts of modern literature. Set in Oceania, one of the three inter-continental superstate that divided the world among themselves after a global war, Orwell's masterful critique of the political structures of the time, works itself out through the story of Winston Smith, a man caught in the webs of a dystopian future, and his clandestine love affair with Julia, a young woman he meets during the course of his work for the government. As much as it is an entertaining read, nineteen Eighty-Four is also a brilliant, and more importantly, a timeless satirical attack on the social and political structures of the world.

Great book, audio messed up
Wonderful story, slightly scary story. Sometimes the audio fades out and words are repeated.
Unfortunate Issues
I enjoyed this reading but there were three major and consistent issues that I truly tried to overlook but can’t.
1. The audio needs to be normalized. FREQUENTLY the narrator will whisper. Whether it’s Julia being sleepy or an intense scene where people are raising their voices and then bringing them to a whisper for seriousness. The audio truly drops down to a whisper. 10-20 times in this book I had to just guess what was said or actually rewind and crank my audio. I honestly missed a ton of Julia’s dialog and it made listening a bit of a challenge.
2. There’s countless audio skips in this recording. I would rewind after a skip, assuming my headphones were low on battery or my Bluetooth connection had a momentary issue, but it would skip again since it was actually part of the audio. This happened very often, as often as the whisper problem, and it happened during intense scenes which took me out of the story. Without ruining the story for anyone, this happened a good handful of times in the ministry of love. I truly don’t know if the skips were a second long or a minute. In context they always felt like a second or less but I didn’t have the book with me to validate.
3. This only happened a couple times, and mostly near the end of the book, but there were a few occasions when the narrator would repeat himself. Either he felt he didn’t state a word with the right inflection or the editor connected two clips of audio and didn’t remove the overlap. Either way it confused me greatly when it did happen and caused me to rewind and figure out if I was sleep deprived or if a sentence or word was really repeated. It was jarring.
I hope these issues get resolved. The narrator is truly talented. This is a great story and deserves a fantastic retelling. The narrator did a fine job, I feel like the issues with this are all involved with the editing process.
If I listened to this audiobook again I’d do so with the physical book in my hand to fill in the gaps.
Good book but can be a little boring
